Barataria Preserve – New Orleans

Barataria Preserve is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park on the West Bank, about 10 miles from downtown New Orleans, outside the Federal Hurricane Protection Levees. The area is full of bayous and canals that Jean Lafitte and his men used to smuggle arms, alcohol and other goods into the city, and has now been set up as a nature preserve. It has plenty of hiking paths and on my visit, I only went on half of them, so a return visit will be in order (possibly this weekend).
